Search Marshall County Court Records

Marshall County court records are District Court records for local civil, criminal, family, probate, juvenile, and traffic cases. A Marshall County court records search usually starts online, then moves to Court Administration when a certified copy, older file, restricted record question, or missing document must be handled by the courthouse. The online system is broad, but not every public court file is available on the internet. Record users should separate case search results from official certified copies and should expect different access rules for juvenile, family, civil commitment, domestic abuse, and sealed matters.

Search Marshall County Court Records Online

The official online starting point is Minnesota Court Records Online, often called MCRO. It provides public access to many Minnesota district court case records, including Marshall County District Court records. MCRO has four main tabs: Case Search, Document Search, Hearing Search, and Judgment Search. The system is free and does not currently require registration, but MCRO records are not certified by the Minnesota Judicial Branch.

The MCRO public access portal can search statewide or by county. Marshall County users should select County under court locations and choose Marshall when local results are needed. Name, case number, citation number, and attorney searches work for case records, while documents usually require a case number.

The Minnesota Judicial Branch MCRO overview is the source for the portal's public access scope and online document limits.

The overview page is important because it explains which documents are available online and which records still require a courthouse request.

  1. Open MCRO and choose Case Search for a broad case lookup.
  2. Select the search type: name, case number, citation number, or attorney.
  3. Enter required fields, such as first and last name for a person-name search.
  4. Use Court Locations to select Marshall County when the case was filed locally.
  5. Open the case details, review the Register of Actions, and use Document Search if a public document is available online.

Marshall County Court Records Search Fields

MCRO Case Search has more filters than a simple name box. The fields matter because pending criminal, traffic, and petty misdemeanor cases with no conviction may not appear by defendant name. A case number or citation number can be the better search key for those matters. A county filter also helps keep a common name from returning cases filed in other Minnesota counties.

Types of Marshall County Court Records

Marshall County District Court is the trial court for the county. It handles local civil, family, probate, juvenile, criminal, and traffic cases. Probate is a District Court category, not a separate probate courthouse. Marriage certificates are not court records because the Marshall County Recorder handles marriage licensing and certificates.

  • Civil records can include lawsuits, judgments, garnishments, liens, name changes, landlord-tenant matters, and harassment restraining order cases.
  • Criminal records can include complaints, charges, warrants, pleas, orders, sentencing, fines, probation, and Register of Actions entries.
  • Family records can include divorce, custody, paternity, parenting time, support, and domestic abuse proceedings, subject to online document limits.
  • Probate records can include estate, trust, guardianship, conservatorship, and mental health category records.
  • Traffic records can include citation number, offense, statute, hearing date, fine, disposition, and conviction status.

For the criminal case file itself, use the dedicated criminal court records page. Court charge details after arrest are narrower than the full case file.

What Marshall County Court Records Show

A Marshall County case record can include the case number, filing date, court location, case category, party names, attorneys, hearing dates, docket events, and public documents. The Register of Actions is the chronological event log. It can show filings, orders, notices, hearing entries, judgments, and other case activity. MCRO documents are free when available, but older documents and some case types may not be online.

Document Search is best after Case Search or a court notice has already supplied the case number.

Marshall County Judgment Records

MCRO also has a separate monetary judgment search. It lets users search by debtor name for docketed judgment details and satisfactions. A certified civil judgment search is not the same as a screen result. Certified judgment searches and certified copies are obtained from local court administration under the Judicial Branch copy process.

The MCRO Judgment Search tab uses debtor name, docketed date, judgment status, and court location filters.

For Marshall County judgment searches, select Marshall in court locations when the judgment was docketed in that county.

Public Access for Marshall County Court Records

Minnesota court records are public unless a law, rule, or court order restricts them. Minnesota Rules of Public Access, Rule 4 identifies categories that are not accessible to the public. Minnesota Statutes section 13.03 covers inspection and copying of public government data, while court records also follow Judicial Branch public access rules.

MCRO is a remote access tool, not the full courthouse access set. Some records that can be viewed at a courthouse terminal or through Court Administration are not available on the internet. Current courthouse public-terminal access can be broader than MCRO, but certified copies still require court administration.

The MCRO FAQ explains mobile access, no current registration requirement, timeout limits, pending criminal name-search restrictions, and party-name limits.

The FAQ is especially useful when a party name is missing online or a pending criminal or traffic case cannot be found by name.

Note: MCRO is useful for public lookup, but certified copies come from Court Administration, not from a downloaded screen result.

Restricted Marshall County Court Records

Restricted records include juvenile delinquency and protection matters, adoption records, many civil commitment records, pre-service domestic abuse and harassment data, protected addresses, financial account data, medical and treatment records, and sealed or expunged files. Family documents have narrower online access than many civil or criminal files. In family cases, MCRO generally provides court-prepared orders, notices, and appellate opinions rather than every party-filed document.

Expunged records are sealed from public view, not destroyed. Minnesota Judicial Branch expungement material explains that a petition may be required for some records, while recent Clean Slate changes allow some records to be automatically sealed. Juvenile access is governed by special statutes and should not be treated like adult public access.

The public-access limits in Rule 4 are a core source for these boundaries.

When MCRO withholds a name, document, or case type, the next step is the courthouse or the statute-based access process, not a third-party search.

Marshall County Court Record Requests

For certified copies, older files, off-site records, and documents not online, use Marshall County District Court Administration. The statewide copy page says people may request many public documents through MCRO, but certified copies and certified judgment searches are handled by the court administration office in the county where the case is located. Some off-site records may not be same-day.
